Easter Seals New York

Our Services

Easter Seals New York’s dedication to America’s heroes is demonstrated by the Joseph A. DiChiara Military and Veterans Services – a comprehensive employment program designed to meet the specific needs of veterans entering or re-entering the civilian workforce. This initiative launched five vocational training programs across New York State. The goal of each program is to provide veterans with the tools and training necessary to secure sustainable employment in their communities.

Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program

According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, veterans account for 12% of all homeless adults. In 2014, the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program assisted 150 homeless veterans in New York City and Syracuse find housing assistance and participate in skills assessments, career counseling, and employment trainings. Additional supports include interview clothing, haircuts and makeup, and transportation.

Homeless Female Veterans’/Veterans’ with Families Reintegration Program

More women than ever are returning home from active duty and, like their male counterparts, are faced with challenging barriers to finding employment, a permanent home, and support services. Female veterans struggle to overcome these barriers for several reasons: prevalence of military sexual trauma is high, some women do not identify as veterans, and homeless families fear they will lose their children. In 2014, the Homeless Female Veterans’ and Veterans’ With Families Reintegration Program supported nearly 70 female veterans and their families prepare for, and find, housing and sustainable employment in New York City.

Vets2Jobs

Vets2Jobs programs in Syracuse and Long Island work directly with more than 100 unemployed or underemployed veterans and provide: assessment of skills and interests; assistance with resume writing and interviewing skills; face-to-face time with local businesses in need of qualified workers; and job placement support in their communities. Enrolled veterans receive comprehensive support and training to ensure smooth transition into the civilian workforce.

What People Are Saying...

It was like a gift from God. Easter Seals was there so I didn’t have to lose my pride and integrity. There’s no shame in asking for help,” he said. “You have to have a say in what you want for your life. I’m not a hero. I’m a person with a beautiful family and I’m getting the help that I need.
